Can we harness the power of photosynthesis?

Saturday 4 July 2009 @ 12:29 am

We know that plants gather immense ammounts of energy from the sun through photosynthesis.

How does their energy absorption capacity compare to modern solar cells, and can we someday engineer algae or other simple plants to collect energy for us?
Let me clarify that I’m not talking about a process that destroys the plant. I mean photosynthesis AS a generator.

Does the power of sunblock reduce if I applied it on wet skin?

Saturday 27 June 2009 @ 11:29 pm

It is recommended that moisturisers be applied just after a shower, for maximum benefit as the nutrients get sealed inside the pores and is completely absorbed.
But, is the same true about sunblocks? If the sunblock gets absorbed so much, there won’t be a layer that shields against the sun.

The Ultimate Hybrid Car?

Sunday 21 June 2009 @ 12:09 pm

I’m gonna throw this idea at you. Tell me if this would work/what’s wrong with this. I think this is the Ultimate Hybrid Car.

The car’s body is made from the same material as sun roofs. This allows the car to charge it’s battery without a electrical grid.

Inside the car’s grill is a mini wind powered fan. This fan will generate electricity when the car is in motion.

The car is a Hydrogen powered so if the sun wind fan aren’t producing enough energy it falls back on the Hydrogen engine.

And thats it. What do you think? Any Ideas, Suggestions, Problems?
Blanders: The fan doesn’t Turn On the fan is basically stationary. It moves when the wind pushes the blades…. think 22 inch spinners on your tires :D

How much electrical energy (in kWh) can the wind turbine generate in a year?

Sunday 21 June 2009 @ 12:09 pm

Assume a wind turbine with a hub 50.0 m above the ground, a rotor diameter of 50.0 m, and a wind-power conversion efficiency of 25%. The turbine operates in an area with an average wind-power density of 500 watts/m2 at 50 m altitude. How much electrical energy (in kWh) can the wind turbine generate in a year?
